NEET UG 2026 is expected to be one of the most competitive medical entrance examinations in Indian history, with over 24 lakh registered candidates competing for approximately 1.1 lakh MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges in India and abroad. NEET UG 2026 Exam Pattern
NEET UG 2026 is a pen-and-paper (OMR-based) exam conducted over 3 hours 20 minutes (200 minutes). It consists of 180 questions carrying a maximum of 720 marks, divided across three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). Each subject is split into two sections:
- Section A: 35 questions, all compulsory. Marking: +4 per correct, −1 per wrong.
- Section B: 15 questions, attempt any 10. Marking: +4 per correct, −1 per wrong.
The effective question count per subject is 35 (Section A) + 10 (Section B) = 45 questions, carrying 180 marks. Physics (180) + Chemistry (180) + Botany (180) + Zoology (180) = 720 marks total. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. Darkening two options or incomplete darkening of a bubble is treated as unattempted.
What Changed in the NEET UG Syllabus for 2026
The NEET UG syllabus was substantially revised by NTA in 2023–24 to align with the updated NCERT textbooks published under the new National Curriculum Framework. These changes remain in effect for 2026. If your study material or coaching institute notes predate 2023, some chapters you are studying may have been removed or reduced in scope.
Physics Changes
Several topics from the older syllabus have been condensed or removed. The chapter on Communication Systems (Class 12) has been dropped from the NEET 2026 syllabus. Electronic Devices (semiconductor chapter) is retained but with reduced scope — only basic semiconductor physics, p-n junction diode, and rectifiers are expected. Experimental skills are tested only indirectly through application questions rather than as standalone experimental procedure questions. The core chapters — Mechanics (Class 11), Electrostatics and Current Electricity (Class 12), Optics, and Modern Physics — remain high-weightage and unchanged.
Chemistry Changes
Chemistry in Everyday Life has been reduced in scope. Industrial chemistry topics (manufacturing processes for specific chemicals) have been de-emphasised. Biomolecules and Polymers remain important and are tested with application-level questions. Surface Chemistry and Electrochemistry are unchanged in scope and continue to carry consistent marks. The most important change for most students: Inorganic Chemistry (d-block, f-block, coordination compounds, qualitative analysis) is more directly NCERT-based than ever — reading the NCERT Inorganic chapters line by line is now the single highest-return activity in Chemistry preparation.
Biology Changes
The Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health chapters have been consolidated in the updated NCERT. The core content is unchanged, but some descriptive sections have been condensed. Biotechnology and its Applications remains a high-priority chapter — expect 5–7 questions covering PCR, gel electrophoresis, recombinant DNA technology, transgenic organisms, and Bt crops. Environmental Issues and Biodiversity carry significant combined weightage and should not be treated as low-priority supplementary chapters. Genetics and Evolution (Class 12) and Human Physiology (Class 11) remain the two highest-yield Biology chapters.
Key NTA Guidelines and Operational Rules for 2026
A number of operational rules apply to NEET UG 2026 that every candidate must know in advance:
- Dress code: Wear light-coloured, half-sleeved clothing with no large buttons, decorative work, or pins. Shoes are not permitted at most centres — wear flat slippers or sandals.
- Permitted items: Valid photo ID (Aadhaar/PAN/Passport), printed admit card, passport-size photographs as specified, transparent water bottle, and a transparent geometry pouch with a pen, pencil, and eraser.
- Not permitted: Mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, earphones, any printed paper (other than the admit card), or any electronic device of any kind.
- Reporting time: Candidates must report at least 90 minutes before the exam start time. Gates close 30 minutes before the exam. Late arrivals are not permitted entry under any circumstances.
- City intimation slip: NTA issues a city intimation slip before the admit card release. Download it as soon as available — it tells you your exam city, which is important if you need to arrange accommodation or travel.
Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy for NEET UG 2026
Biology — 360 marks and the most important subject. NEET Biology is almost entirely NCERT-based. If you can reproduce every line, diagram, table, and example from Class 11 and 12 Biology NCERT textbooks, you are positioned to score 340 or above in this section. Focus heavily on: Genetics and Evolution (12+ questions consistently), Human Physiology (10–12 questions), Plant Physiology (8–10 questions), Diversity in Living World (8–10 questions), and Biotechnology (5–7 questions). Do not paraphrase NCERT — quote it.
Chemistry — 180 marks divided across three branches. Physical Chemistry (Thermodynamics, Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics) requires problem-solving practice — these chapters do not respond to memorisation alone. Organic Chemistry (reaction mechanisms, named reactions, IUPAC nomenclature, biomolecules) requires conceptual understanding of electron movement and reaction patterns. Inorganic Chemistry (Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, d-block and f-block elements, Qualitative Analysis) requires careful, line-by-line NCERT reading and memorisation of specific data points.
Physics — 180 marks and the biggest score differentiator. Physics is the subject where average performers most commonly lose marks. The highest-weightage chapters are Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy-Power, Rotational Motion — Class 11) and Electrostatics + Current Electricity (Class 12). Optics (Ray Optics and Wave Optics) and Modern Physics (Photoelectric Effect, Atoms, Nuclei, Dual Nature) appear in Section B regularly and should not be left unrevised.
